Largo keeping
We're raising funds to keep Largo open.
Calling for the community, the freelancers, the artists, the pirates, the startups and anyone who needs a place to work, to be and to build their ideas.
If Largo has inspired you, hosted you, challenged you, or if you believe cities need spaces like it—now is the time to help us keep going.
A space socially sustainable first.
Largo wasn’t created to scale. It wasn’t designed for profit. It wasn’t designed as a business. It was built—intentionally—as a place for people. A place for pause, creativity, connection, and care. Something between home and work. What sociologists call a “third place. What Margaret Wheatley calls islands of sanity — a gift of possibility and refuge created by people's commitment to form a healthy community to do meaningful work.
But it’s not financially secure.
And maybe that’s not a failure, maybe it’s the design.
We know that building a space like this in a small town like Peniche — without investors or extractive revenue streams — is difficult. But we will keep pursuing it. Because these spaces should exist. They’re rare and they’re necessary.

Largo has become a home for artists, digital nomads, neighbours, and local organisers. It’s socially sustainable. It has impact. Space is free to those who needed it. Community events are hosted for free. Community, creativity, people are put first.
We run Largo with care, not capital. Care alone doesn’t pay the bills.
We’re proud of that choice, but it’s also why we’re here—asking for your help.

Space for possibility and belonging
Located in a small, quiet neighborhood square near the heart of Peniche, Portugal, Largo is where work doesn't just happen at a desk computer screen. It happens on quiet mornings where remote workers share a coffee break and end up collaborating on a new project, or a team of designers propose and explore possibilities beyond the constraints of the present.

  • The space
Inside Largo’s 160-square-meters of open space there is a Library of Things and Makerspace, coworking areas, a kitchen, all in a flexible layout that can adapt to many kinds of usages, events, workshops or community gatherings.

  • Title
Here, locals and remote workers, thinkers and makers get together. Here kids teach adults how to prototype their ideas in our Makerspace 3D printer. Computers are repaired and donated for remote learning. A neighbour teaches a recipe. Novelists find silence in the hum of conversation. A team sketches their next project on the whiteboard wall.

More than anything, what Largo does is create the conditions that people need to reach and shape ideas into solutions to society's most wicked problems.
Why it matters
We believe spaces like Largo are essential infrastructure. They’re the soil in which ideas root and grow. In a world of disconnection and precarity, Largo offers something rare, just by existing and being open.
  • Shared meaning — A collective sense of purpose that forms when diverse people co-create something together.
  • Slow growth — intentional, sustainable development rooted in trust and care.
  • Real community — a web of relationships built through mutual support, openness, and ongoing presence.

We hope to not just survive—but to evolve, and to become an example of radical openness, care-based design, and circular community funding.

We want to invite everyone into the process with radical transparency, sharing questions, learnings and takeaways throughout. We want to continue shaping the space, systems, and decisions around the needs, well-being, and voices of the people who use it — prioritising relationships and inclusion over efficiency or profit.

Even more, we want resources to be shared and reinvested locally to sustain the community that sustains the space.

If Largo has inspired you, hosted you, challenged you—or if you believe cities need spaces like it—now is the time to help us keep it going.

What are we asking?
We’re at a critical moment. Due to a mix of ongoing rent obligations and a lack of funding buffers, Largo is in debt—and the future is even more uncertain.
Without urgent support, we won’t be able to keep Largo alive. With your support, we want to:
Pay off debt
To pay off debt we have with Largo's very supportive landlady that we deeply appreciate for all the support and patience shown to the project. Right now we have a year of rent to be paid.
Sustainability
To secure future rent and to design a better structure to make Largo, and spaces like Largo, financially sustainable long term.
Upgrade
To make the space better, to make repairs and upgrades to the space and if possible, add on to what we already have.
A campaign for
the bigger questions
We believe spaces like Largo shouldn’t be the exception. They should be everywhere. How do we keep places like this alive in a world that doesn’t value them financially? How do we fund commons—not because they generate profit, but because they generate meaning, memory, and connection?
This isn’t just a plea—it’s an invitation to co-create.
We’re treating this not only as a fundraiser, but as an open experiment in how grassroots spaces can sustain themselves with community support.
We will:
  • Share transparent budgets and updates weekly.
  • Host community assemblies to discuss priorities, needs and progress.
  • Share documentation of the process — questions, learnings, takeaways, resources and tools—to serve as a model for others trying to build places like Largo elsewhere.
How you can support
If you believe spaces like this should exist—not just in Peniche, but anywhere—please join and support us.
This is just our very first out call for help. We will be updating and upgrading almost daily as we build and find more ways of keeping Largo.
